***The Fall of Constantinople came with  the capture of the capital of the Byzantine Empire by an invading Ottoman army on 29 May 1453 commanded by the 21-year-old Sultan Mehmed II, who defeated an army commanded by Emperor Constantine XI Palaiologos
The Ottomans  conquest was due to the use of newly discovered power of gunpowder (which powered formidable cannons).

The Greeks fled with their timeless books on art and literature and came to Italy.

That was the  beginning of the golden period of art in Europe : THE RENAISSANCE.

One of tbe immortal figures of the Renaissancs was MICHAELANGELO. Among his timeless creations is the PIETA

The Pietà is housed in St. Peter's Basilica, Vatican City. It is the first of a number of works of the same theme by the artist. The statue was commissioned for the French Cardinal Jean de Bilhères.
